How to set up Microsoft Smart Network Data Services (SNDS)

Written by Max Olkhovskyi

What is SNDS?

Microsoft's Smart Network Data Service (SNDS) provides data about mail traffic and spam scores for IP addresses and networks that send email to Outlook.com (Hotmail). It allows mail administrators to monitor the reputation of their sending IPs.

Before starting the SNDS account setup, you need to have or create an @outlook.com account so you can create a Microsoft Smart Network Data Services (SNDS) account.

Step 1: Request Access

  1. On the "Request Access" page, enter the network you want to monitor. Supported formats:

    • Single IP address — e.g. 1.2.3.4

    • Range — e.g. 1.2.3.0 - 1.2.3.255

    • CIDR — e.g. 1.2.3.0/24

    • ASN — e.g. AS1234

In the highlighted field shown in the screenshot, enter the sending IP address you use for sending emails.

  2. Click "Submit".

Step 2: Email Verification (Step 2 of 3)

After submitting, SNDS looks up email addresses associated with the specified network in an authoritative way (e.g., from WHOIS or abuse/postmaster records).

  1. A list of verified email addresses will be displayed, such as:

  2. Select the email address where you can receive mail and where Microsoft will send sign-up instructions.

  3. Optionally, add a comment in the text box to explain who you are and why you are receiving this message.

  4. Click "Send mail to the chosen address".

Step 3: Complete Sign-Up

Check the inbox/junk folder of the address you selected. Follow the link in the email from Microsoft to complete registration and gain access to your SNDS dashboard.

Once access is granted:

  1. Log in to SNDS at the link provided in the confirmation email.

  2. Navigate to "View Data" in the left-hand menu. Then select "View or change your automated access settings".

  3. On the "Automated Data Access" page, click "Enable Automated Access" (or verify it is already enabled).

Next, copy the token as shown in the screenshot and add it to the platform.

Step 4: Connect your SNDS account to the platform

  1. Select the domain you connected to SNDS, then choose the Microsoft SNDS option and click the "Connect" button.

  2. After that, paste the token you copied from the "Automated Data Access" page in Microsoft SNDS into the "SNDS API Key" field. Then press "Connect".

Congratulations, the setup process is complete. After some time, you will be able to see the data on the corresponding dashboards and explore your deliverability analytics from a whole new perspective.
