How to create and verify a domain in Google Postmaster Tools

Written by Max Olkhovskyi

Google Postmaster Tools helps you monitor your Gmail deliverability, spam rate, domain reputation, authentication status, and more.

You can access it here: Google Postmaster Tools

Step 1: Sign in to Google Postmaster Tools

Open the platform and log in with your Google account (Gmail or Google Workspace account). After logging in, click "Select a domain" then "Manage domains".

Step 2: Add your domain

Click the "Add new domain" button. A pop up window will appear where you need to enter the name of your sending domain or subdomain.

Enter the domain or subdomain you use for sending emails.

Examples:

  • domain.com

  • mail.domain.com

  • mg.domain.com

Next, press "Create".

After adding the domain, you will see a confirmation message indicating that the domain was successfully added. Once you see this message, click the Back button to return to the "Manage Domains page".

Step 3: Add the TXT record to your DNS

Find your domain in the list, click the three dots menu on the right side, then select "Verify domain".

Available Verification Methods

Google Postmaster Tools provides two ways to verify domain ownership:

• TXT record
• CNAME record

For root domains, the TXT method is usually the simplest option.
If you are verifying a subdomain, it is recommended to use the CNAME method instead.

Access Your DNS Provider

Log in to the platform where your domain DNS records are managed, such as:

• Cloudflare
• GoDaddy
• Namecheap
• Squarespace
• Route53
• or any other DNS provider

Once logged in, open the DNS management section for the domain you want to verify.

Add the Verification Record

Google Postmaster Tools will provide a verification value that needs to be added to your DNS configuration.

Example TXT record:

Record Type

Host / Name

Value

TXT

@

google-site-verification=xxxxx

If you are using the CNAME verification method, Google will instead provide:

• CNAME Host / Label
• CNAME Target / Destination

Copy the exact values from Google Postmaster Tools and create the corresponding DNS record in your provider dashboard.

Save Changes and Verify the Domain

After adding the DNS record:

  1. Save the DNS changes

  2. Return to Google Postmaster Tools

  3. Click Verify

Google mentions that verification can take up to 10 minutes. However, depending on your DNS provider and DNS propagation speed, it may sometimes take longer.

Once the DNS record is fully propagated and detected by Google, the domain will automatically become verified.

Step 4: Connect your Postmaster account to the platform

Open the platform and select the domain you previously verified in Postmaster. Then choose the corresponding Google Postmaster connection option and click the Connect button.

After that, sign in using the same email account you used to create your Postmaster account.

Once logged in, approve the requested permissions so we can securely display your Postmaster data and analytics inside the platform.

Congratulations, your Postmaster account has been successfully connected to the analytics system. After some time, you will start seeing Gmail dashboards and detailed deliverability insights in the Gmail section.

Important Notes

  • DNS propagation may take from a few minutes up to 24 hours.

  • If verification does not work immediately, wait a bit and try again.

  • Make sure the record is added to the correct domain DNS zone.
